With Mandela’s 90th birthday coming up, a lot of South Africans out there will be getting more nervous by the day, all as a result of an urban legend that has been doing the rounds for ages, called ‘Nag van die lang messe’ (Night of the long knives), which originated from visions by Siener van Rensburg.
In short, one of the visions of Van Rensburg predicts that as soon as Nelson Mandela dies, all the black people in the country are going to slaughter the white people… As an article on World Net Daily states, “One of the operations planned entails 70,000 armed black men ‘being transported to the Johannesburg city center within an hour’ in taxicabs to attack whites… Sources say most blacks in the country are aware of the plans. When racial disputes occur, blacks often tell whites, ‘Wait until Mandela dies.’ … The article also goes on quoting someone saying: “I have prepared myself and we have a gathering place where we can fortify for four weeks after Mandela’s death…If nothing happens it will be a miracle.”
Apparently the killing will move to Pretoria from there (Johannesburg), and that will be the sign to the rest of the black people in the country to kill the rest of the whites. Even more astounding, is that it is said by these prophets of doom that the blacks are getting impatient with Mandela not dieing! And that a while ago some of them were on the verge of starting with the killings, and had to be stopped by taxi-drivers! How ludicrous. It is blatently obvious that by far the most people in the country, regardless of their colour, absolutely adores Nelson Mandela.
As can be expected, there are tons of debate surrounding the issue, and this forum is just a typical example of this. These rumours are mostly rife among Afrikaans people, but plenty of English are also concerned, as is evident by forums like these. However, on a predominantly Afrikaans pop-culture website called Litnet, I found an article that I tend to agree with, saying that the people who are the most aware of colour and race, are the ones who know the least about that specific race and culture.
Personally I don’t believe in any of these rumours, but find it interesting how urban legends and fear can drive people to behave totally unreasonably and illogically. And I don’t even want to think how these people are going to react the day that Mandela does unfortunately pass away… I have a feeling that it will be them creating all the chaos.
Firstly, Mandelas WAS a great man. Wishing that someone like him would die is truly dispicable.
Secondly, my ’lurking fear of an upsurge in black-on-white violence’ does NOT cause me to refuse it’s possibility. Yes it does happen, as is illustrated in the farm killings, but do you really beleive that ALL the blacks want to kill ALL the whites???? Even with the xenophobia, not EVERYONE is guilty and took part.
Your hatefull outlook on life poisons your views, and it seems like a ’reverse UHURU’ is what would really tickle your fancy.
Alice, what basis do you have for proclaiming Mandela’s greatness other than your use of bold text?
Are you aware he admitted to signing off on the Church Street bombing in his autobiography? Are you aware he refused to publically renounce violence in 1985, when P.W. Botha told him he could be released from prison if he did so? Are you aware of how many black people were necklaced or otherwise murdered by the his terrorist organisation, the ANC?
To continue, I certainly did not say that all that blacks want to kill all whites. It seems that twisting people’s words beyond recognition is your go-to style of debate.
Understand: it won’t take ALL black people to exterminate the whites, immigrants, non-ANC-voting blacks or whichever other minority group you care to mention. It will only take a violent segment of the black population. As shown by the farm-killings, and arguably the xenophobia issue, such a segment exists and the government is doing nothing to control it. Indeed, as certain recently publicised comments reveal, members of that segment exist in the ranks of government.
Denouncing history fact and a realistic assessment of the political climate as ”hatefull” will not make you right, Alice. Neither will your laughable accusation that I wish murder upon the black people. Such a statement is baseless slander.
What would ”really tickle my fancy” re: South Africa is a lot less political bullshit and a lot less violence, AIDS, crime, corruption, nepotism... And on and on.
In the face of all this, not to mention the possibility of Uhuru, does it not make more sense for us to stand together rather than argue? Realise: you may disagree with me but I am not your enemy. My intention here is to save your life. It is those who want you dead or gone that are your enemy.
2) I have the right to express my dissent with anything you publish. I invite the same criticism of my own ”articles.”
3) It seems you CAN’T argue with me.
I am in the process of moving to Canada. While I’m not emigrating specifically to avoid Uhuru, there are more than enough ”regular,” daily atrocities committed in SA for my liking. 50 murders a day and 3 times as many rapes? Really? Who would want to start a family in such a dangerous enviroment? What future would my children have under the ANC government and its racist policies anyway?
In such a violent, divided and ultimately broken society, genocide is an all too likely outcome. If you don’t think that’s something to stress about, you obviously don’t value your own life, people or culture very highly.
The problem is, I believe we’ve allowed ourselves to adopt a victim mentality. We’re so stunned by the evil all around us that we feel helpess to fight it. The most we can do seems to be to put up high walls, but sadly these keep out our neighbours as much as the criminals.
We have to consider where our silence, isolation and fear are taking us. It’s a dark, dark place... Unless we stand together to demand our human rights, as other oppressed minorities around the world have done, things will not improve for us, or for the country.

As for the murder of whites, it’s been happening for some time now and continues apace. Up to 3000 white farmers have been murdered, typically in a sadistic, ritualised fashion which the head of Genocide Watch warns is a precursor to ethnic cleansing.

Your shallow, nearly thoughtless analysis of the Uhuru question does you little credit, Alice. Such an explosion of hate-fueled slaughter may seem an impossibility to you now, but I’m sure three months ago you would’ve thought the same of the current racist mob violence.
I can only conclude that your lurking fear of an upsurge in black-on-white violence compells you to deny and refuse its possibility. Allowing your mind to fail you in this way is neither strong nor wise.
